DAVAO CITY — Stop. Breathe. Contemplate. And eat samosa. Samo-what, you might ask.

Samosa is much like the Filipino empanada (pie). The only difference is the spice, which can be quite hot, and the vegetarian filling.

Samosa is not common in Davao City. In fact, we think the only place you can buy these pies is at the Indian Mini-Mart (House of Spices), just across the Saint Paul Church in Juna Subdivision, in Matina.

?Red Tide? Ban in Mati, Other Areas

DAVAO CITY — Latest laboratory analysis of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) have established that some areas in Mindanao, including Davao Oriental, are still positive of “red tide” toxins and have thus been put under a so-called ?shellfish ban.?

The coastal waters of Dumaguillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur, Balite Bay in Mati, Davao Oriental, and Bislig Bay in Bislig City, Surigao del Sur have been found positive of red tide toxins.

Fusion Chips, Anyone?

The Davao provinces, after all, are known for their bananas and their durian. Wouldn?t it be nice to fuse — fusion chips! — the flavors of the two fruits?

It gets better ? or worse, depending on your taste.

There are 11 other flavors aside from banana chips ?caf? with durian jam?: cheese, barbecue, glazed bits with sesame seeds, chocolate, strawberry, caf? espresso, twin berries, glazed banana fries with sesame seeds, sweet and spicy, chocolate strawberry half dip, and what the trade department calls the ?Davao trail mix? made of banana chips, dried mango, green peas, peanuts, and coconut flakes.
