139 abused workers in Lebanon return home to Philippines

MANILA ? Charg? d’Affaires, a.i. (CDA) Mariano A. Dumia of the Philippine Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon reported to the Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo that the Embassy?s overcrowded Welfare Center has emptied out as 139 Filipino workers, some of whom had been in the Center for as long as ten months, are scheduled to arrive in Manila at 2:45 p.m. today.

Philippines: Gabriela dominates OFW exit poll in HK

MANILA — Taking its cue from the results of an independent exit poll by a local Hong Kong paper, an alliance of organizations composed of OFWs and their families expressed confidence that the Gabriela Women?s Partylist will lead partylist elections among OFWs and their families.

The exit poll by The Sun was conducted among nearly 600 OFW voters outside the Bayanihan Center polling place on April 15 and 22, the first two Sundays of OAV voting.

Philippines wants immediate repatriation of Filipinos killed in Iraq

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has instructed the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to immediately work for the repatriation of the remains of four overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who were reportedly killed during a rocket attack in Baghdad, Iraq Wednesday.

MANILA — President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo thanked the Shariah courts in Saudi Arabia, including its ruler King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, for the release yesterday of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Sarah Dematera who was convicted to hang for allegedly killing her female employer in the oil-rich kingdom in 1992.
