Marcos’ substitute to BBL nixed

DAVAO CITY – Peace advocates under All-Out-Peace (AOP) movement slammed the proposed substitute Bangsamoro Basic Law bill by Senator Ferdinand Marcos, Jr who chairs the Senate committee on local governments.

Marcos, in a privilege speech last week, said there are flaws that were identified in the hearings and consultations conducted by his committee and passing the bill in its current form will lead to “perdition”.

Gus Miclat, a convener of the AOP, said Marcos’ action “is the height of arrogance, disregarding the long, tedious and studied negotiations that went into the crafting of the BBL.”

“To junk it just like that smacks of political opportunism at the lowest level,” Miclat said.

“The BBL is not an ordinary piece of legislation. It is a social justice instrument that envisions peace and real social progress not just for Mindanao but for the whole country,” he said.

Miclat said lawmakers should tackle the proposed bill and decide based on what is right and not due to results of “fleeting political surveys”.
