DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte warned against what he called “free loaders” in the Pahulayan, a newly installed gym-like facility opposite the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC).
“Kung magsamok-samok mo, kung magbinuang kag wala kay masakiton, ang inyong landing, sigurado gyud didto sa emergency room,” Duterte said during his Sunday television program, Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa.
Free loaders, according to the vice mayor, are those who have no illnesses and patients yet will avail of the facility just to sleep and eat.
Pahulayan is located beside the Lingap sa Mahirap center and was put up, according to Duterte, with the permission of the hospital authorities. It is spacious where watchers can spread their banig to sleep, he said, and also has chairs, a number of comfort rooms and cooking area.
“They don’t have a place to sleep over unlike those from Davao City,” he said.
“Masakit ang inahan o amahan, dad-on na nila ang tanang pamilya sa ospital ug walay katulogan, walay kasilyas,” adding that, “Naglabad akong ulo nagtan-aw sa ila nga naglubog sa semento.”
Most of those who can avail of the facility, Duterte said, are from Cotabato and Davao Oriental. There is also a system to identify legits from free loaders. (Marilou Aguirre-Tuburan/davaotoday.com)
