DAVAO CITY – The Triathlon Association of Davao (TriAD) together with the Department of Tourism – XI will hold a Flanax DurianMan Triathlon on May 2, as one of the major events for Visit Davao Fun Sale 2015.
The sporting event involves the completion of three continuous and sequential endurance sports, including swimming, biking and running.
DurianMan race technical head Ernesto “Bong” Rivera said that triathlon is “one of the few sports that athletes will travel far to participate.”
“They (athletes) would travel just to indulge in the sport ,” Rivera said.
He also added that the event will serve as a “sports tourism event” to entice more tourists to visit the metropolis.
Meanwhile, overall event director Jeremy James Sarona said that the race features two categories – standard Olympic and sprint.
Standard Olympic category covers 1.5 kilometers swim, 40-kilometer bike and 10K run while the sprint category covers 750-kilometer swim, 20K bike and 5K run.
“The swim will start at Villa Josefina, Toril, Davao City. When they are done swimming, they will go to the transition area which is also located in Villa Josefina. They will get their bikes and they will bike to Quimpo Boulevard and go straight to Felcris Centrale,” Sarona said.
The run will start and finish at Felcris Centrale.
Sarona also added that they will have a race briefing on May 1 in which they have invited elite athletes who will do a mini talk and a clinic for the athletes and guests.
“Two of them are from Australia, they are based in Subic right now. The names are Michael Murphy and Mitch Robins,” he said.
Aside from the two, they have also invited the country’s top Filipina triathletes Monica Torres and Elsie Langit.
200 triathletes from different parts of Mindanao are expected to join the event. (davaotoday.com)
