Davao lawmaker questions medical school’s policies against its nursing graduates

Davao City Councilor Leah Librado-Yap questions the policy being implemented by the Mindanao Medical Foundation College (MMFC) administration to its nursing graduates.

In her privilege speech yesterday at the Regular Session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP), she narrated how a group of nursing graduates sought her help regarding the complaints they wanted to lodge against MMFC on the following issues: the conduct of an assessment exam before they will be able to get their credentials and a waiver they were made to sign in order to obtain their school records.

The graduates claimed the conduct of the assessment exam is not part of the school’s curriculum for the nursing course.  They said they already paid PHP 540 (USD 12.64) for their transcript of records and special order — two of the documents required by the Philippine Regulatory Commission (PRC) before they can take the Nursing Licensure Exam.

“It is appalling how a school administration choose to do this to their students or graduates.  The real picture puts the students and their parents who are paying for their studies in a dismal and frustrating situation because after expecting their children to finally graduate and obtain a college degree, here comes MMFC implementing policies that are outright unfair and unjust,” Librado-Yap said.

“This constitutes a grave violation on the rights of the students,” Librado-Yap pointed out, citing instances wherein MMFC graduates who failed the so-called assessment exam were left in limbo and were not given their credentials.

“As to why they were obliged and mandated to comply with the assessment exam, they were not given a valid reason by MMFC when in fact such has not been approved by the Ched (Commission on Higher Education).  We will also ask Ched regarding this matter,” Librado-Yap, head of the SP Committee on Education, said.

Last April 12, a press conference was held at the SP Councilors’ Lounge for the more or less 50 students who aired their complaints regarding their transcript of records and other pertinent school records which were put on hold by MMFC.  Many of them were not able to file their applications before the PRC to take up the Nursing Licensure Exam this year and the previous year.
