Philippines: Martial Law-Era Artists in Bayan Muna Miting de Avance

May. 07, 2007

What’s a cultural rally without fiery and bombastic speakers who stir
people out of stupor and lethargy?

Set to address the rally are: Bayan Muna Secretary-General Nathanael
Santiago who was once known as the fiery spokesperson of the League of
Filipino Students during the dying days of the Marcos dictatorship;
Casio who was a high school student in Edsa 1 but rose to fame as
Bagong Alyansang Makabayan’s secretary-general in Edsa 2; Colmenares
who was detained at a young age of 17 on orders of the dictator; and
Bayan Muna Chairperson Dr. Reynaldo Lesaca. who will pay tribute to
the sacrifices of the party’s members.

Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay, a member of the Marcos-time lawyers
group Mabini, is also expected to speak on the Marcosian treatment he
is getting from the Arroyo administration.

The choice of venue is not accidental. For Bayan Muna, there’s a need
to stress its grassroots support base and at the same time thank
Barangay Tatalon residents for their support. Elsewhere in Metro
Manila, other communities are unlucky; their areas are infested by
electioneering soldiers deployed despite strict constitutional
requirements.

Bayan Muna first ran for partylist representation in 2001 elections
which it topped to the consternation of doomsayers and critics. The
party repeated the feat in 2004.

Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations surveys since February 2007
consistently place Bayan Muna as the top partylist of choice of
voters, positioning the party for a three-peat.###
