Maguindanao canvassing suspended

May. 22, 2007

The canvassing of votes from Maguindanao, the province at the center of a controversy allegedly involving massive election fraud, has been suspended by the National Board of Canvassers. The board cited as reason for the suspension the fact that the election supervisor for the province has been absent during the canvassing.

The administration Team Unity has recently claimed a 12-0 sweep in the senatorial race in the province. This claim, however, has been disputed by testimonies, mostly to election watchdogs and the media, that teachers and even children were used to manufacture the votes in Maguindanao in the middle of the night, under the guard of soldiers.
