DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Davao City Police Office (DCPO) has reported a decrease in the recorded crime volume for 2018 due to the intensified campaign against criminality.
The crime volume comparison between 2017 and 2018 is down to 34.29 percent, according to Senior Insp. Maria Teresita Gaspan, DCPO spokesperson.
DCPO previously recorded a total crime volume of 7,576 cases for 2017 while in 2018 authorities only recorded a number of 4,978 cases.
Gaspan said the decrease of a number of crimes attributed to three major factors such as the intensified campaign “Oplan Kalinaw” that subject criminal suspects to profiling and serving of warrant of arrests.
“This effort serves as a chilling effect to the criminals in the community,” said Gaspan.
Another is the intensified enforcement of the law and ordinances in the city, which Gaspan said an effort to conduct regular massive educational campaign and awareness to the public.
The third, she said, is the maximum police visibility in all areas in the city. DCPO has deployed enough personnel from checkpoints, to all public places and also augment personnel in every activities and event to ensure safety.
According to Gaspan, DCPO recorded 4,978 cases record in 2018 with the following crime distribution: Theft (34%), Physical Injury (25%), Robbery (13%) Motornapping (3%), Rape (15%), Homicide (1%), and Carnapping (1%).
Another record showed that for crimes against a person, DCPO has recorded 290 cases of physical injury in 2018 which was lower than the previous record of 380 in 2017.
Rape also recorded a decrease of a number from 215 cases in 2017 to 174 cases in 2018. Other cases like Murder have only 94 cases in 2018 compared to 122 cases in 2017 while Homicide has 12 cases in 2018 from 20 cases in 2017.
In terms of crime against property, the case of theft has lowered down from 622 cases in 2017 to 390 in 2018. Robbery also lowered down from 200 in 2017 to 153 in 2018 and carnapping 7(2017) down to 5(2018).
Gaspan noted that one of the alarming cases from last year was the number of motornapping incidents in the city which was higher than in 2017. DCPO has recorded an increase of 10 cases from 20 cases (2017) to 30 (2018).
“Most of the motornapping incidents involve a Honda XRM motorcycle. With this, we are now planning to conduct coordination scheme with all motorcycle owners for safety,” said Gaspan.
Non-Index Crime records also lowered down to 36.03 percent in 2018. The authorities recorded a total of 3,830 in 2018 compared to 5,988 cases in 2017.
The highest record of cases from the DCPO is the 2,550 cases of Violations of Special Laws in 2018 but is lower than the 4,264 cases recorded in 2017.
This was followed by Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Damage to Property that recorded a total of 528 in 2017 and down to 421 in 2018. Others were Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Physical Injury with 572 in 2017 down to 452 cases in 2018.
An increase in number for Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Homicide was recorded from 80 cases in 2017 to 99 cases in 2018.
Meanwhile, on the apprehension of drug suspects, Gaspan said the DCPO has arrested a total number of 1,001 from December 2017 to January 2019.
Gaspan added there are around 836 anti-drug operations in the city which resulted in the arrest of 607 suspects in a buy-bust operation.s Others she said was apprehended in police response and checkpoints.
Police also implemented 20 search warrants and 34 warrant of arrests in connection with anti-drug operations.
“Of the total apprehended suspects on drug-related cases, we have recorded 44 minors. Those ages 15 and below were turned over to DSWD for intervention while those after 15 years old but below 18 years old were into diversion program,” said Gaspan. (davaotoday.com)
