DAVAO CITY – Lawmakers urged the House Committee on Transportation to investigate the lack of closed-circuit television (CCTVs) cameras in the country’s airports saying “this is needed to maintain peace and order and to address imminent security threats”.
In a statement, Rep. Mariano Michael M. Velarde Jr. of Buhay Partylist, principal author of House Resolution 2499, said there is a need to install a surveillance system and data recordings and storage in all domestic and international airports in the country.
Velarde said there are several incidents of alleged “laglag-bala” in Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and Caticlan Airport involving overseas Filipino workers and local and domestic tourists, “which has negatively affected the image of the Philippines”.
“With functioning high resolution CCTVs and digital video recorders (DVRs) in strategic areas covering all sectors of airports, will aid in the thorough investigation of said incidents and prevent the same to happen again,” Velarde said.
In filing the resolution, the authors cited Section 5, Article II of the Constitution which states that it is the duty of the State to maintain peace and order, to protect life, liberty, and property and to promote the general welfare of the people. (davaotoday.com)
