DAVAO CITY – The Institute of Popular Opinion of the University of Mindanao (IPO-UM) recently conducted a survey on Federalism. The survey aims to determine how the Davaoeños understand Federalism and determine their stand on it.
The survey, “Dabawenyo’s Understanding of Federalism”, was conducted last April 7 to 18, 2015.
“Understanding Federalism comes in five thematic motions. These are governance, politics, integration, authority, and economy,” said IPO Focal Person Adrian Tamayo.
A total of 1,200 respondents were systematically chosen from the three district of Davao. Majority of the respondents are 18 to 35 years old comprising of 48 percent of the samples while 28 percent are coming from 36 to 46 age brackets.
Moreover 7 in 10 Davaoeños favor Federalism while 3 do not like the idea.
Those who favor Federalism point the economic opportunities (43%), increase of local budget (49%), address peace and order situation (34%), reduce poverty (26%), improve public service (30%).
Those who do not favor are thinking that it is not the system that is problematic; it is the people running the government (21%), Federalism will not be implemented anyway (20%), the current unitary system of government is good (15%), and view Federalism as undemocratic (6%).
