Workers slam lack of protection in construction

Feb. 05, 2015

The militant Kilusang Mayo Uno condemned today the lack of protection for workers in the construction sector following the recent collapse of a portion of a constructed condominium in Bonifacio Global City in Taguig that killed two workers and injured several others.

Elmer Labog, KMU chairperson said that while government promotes construction, “it refuses to give construction workers the necessary protection in the form of mandatory inspection of adherence to health and safety standards, criminalization of violations of such standards, and defense of workers’ right to unionize.”

Labog said the Department of Labor and Employment Order No. 57-04, which imposes ‘self-monitoring’ by firms that employ more than 200 workers, remains in full effect.

Labog also said current laws do not criminalize grave violations on occupational health and safety standards.
