DAVAO CITY — In a bid towards rice sufficiency by the end of this year, the province of Davao Oriental is set to give more farmers additional incentives that will encourage them to engage in rice production.
Davao Oriental governor Corazon Malanyaon announced that more farmers will get subsidy of farm inputs like fertilizer and palay seeds, as well as technical assistance to farmers for two seasons. This is through a grant from the Mindanao Rural Development Program that will put up an irrigation system for at least 1,700 hectares of rice farms in the east coast.
At present, a total of 15,000 hectares of farmlands in the east coast of Davao Oriental may potentially be used for rice production, but only half of this area has irrigation. Malanyaon is looking into the potentials of the east coast as a rice granary, extending beyond the town of Banaybanay, which is already a known rice cultivating area.
Malanyaon is optimistic that their target of rice sufficiency can be met. The previous harvest season showed a yield increase of 20 percent as the province offered incentives to the farmers along with providing necessary agricultural and infrastructure requirements in rice farming. The governor announced the plan to give additional incentives during the province’s 42nd Foundation Anniversary Program. (PIA XI)
