At least nine now declared dead in latest quake aftermath

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — At least nine people have already died in the aftermath of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that rocked the province of Davao del Sur and other areas in Mindanao on December 15, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The NDRRMC, in its 6 a.m. report released on Wednesday, December 18, said that 111 were also injured and one remained missing in Davao Region and Soccsksargen.

The reported casualties, however, are for further validation and verification, NDRRMC said.

In the same regions, 41 public structures were damaged, of which nine were totally damaged and 32 were partially damaged. In total, 128 schools and 19 health facilities were also damaged by the earthquake.

As of Dec 17, a total of 700 aftershocks were recorded, of which 295 were plotted and 70 were felt.

The town of Padada in Davao del Sur was again struck by a magnitude 5.3 quake at 4:18 am on Wednesday. Intensity V was felt in Digos City, and Intensity IV in General Santos City.

The magnitude 6.9 quake on December 15 was the strongest quake yet to hit a large portion of Mindanao since October and November this year. (davaotoday.com)
