DAVAO CITY – Ramadhan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, starts Thursday. It is the holiest month in the lunar cycle-based Hijiri calendar, and Muslims believe it to be the month when the holy Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
During Ramadhan, devout Muslims fast during daylight hours. They do not eat nor drink, and refrain from all earthly wants from dawn to sunset in 28 days.
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam. During the fast, Muslims believe that they are brought closer to God by gaining perspective and understanding of those less privileged than them. It is also meant to increase one’s patience and generosity towards others.
