Youth group urges congress to pass FOI bill

Sep. 29, 2015

DAVAO CITY – Members of the FOI Youth Initiative (FYI) trooped the House of Representatives Monday, handing out white roses to the representatives to renew the call for the passage of House Bill No. 5801, or the People’s Freedom of Information Act.

In a statement, FYI, a network of student organizations, said they want to show “that young people also want FOI.”

“It is not a proposed measure that will only benefit the media. It is a people’s bill—one that will allow citizens to not only be informed, but also to carry out informed actions that will assist government in national development,” said FYI in a statement.

The measure is currently awaiting second reading in the Congress plenary.

The consolidated FOI Bill was finalized by a technical working group on September 3 last year. The bill was approved by the Committee on Public Information on November 24, 2014 and by the Committee on Appropriations on March 4 this year. (davaotoday.com)
