Bayan condems shooting of Inquirer correspondent

The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan condemns the ambush try on Inquirer correspondent Delfin Mallari, Jr.

Mallari has been active in covering issues such as human rights violations and political killings as well as agrarian issues and the stalled peace process between the National Democratic Front and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines.

The style of the ambush is reminiscent of the modus operandi in the extrajudicial killings of activists. Gunmen on board a motorcycle are again the perpetrators of the crime.

That a reporter for a major broadsheet has been targeted in broad daylight by motorcycle-ridding assassins shows that the culture of impunity remains unchanged. The attempted murder seems to mock the inability of the law enforcers and the Arroyo government to stop the killings.

Bayan demands a speedy and through investigation into the attempted murder of Mallari.

We hold the Arroyo regime responsible for its inability to stop the killings of activists and journalists.
