Dautang tilimad-on ang mihinagbo kang Haribon sa iyang pagpalagdas og lupad balik sa kabunturan sa Dakong Pulo,human niya gikabildo ang mga baganing manggugubat ni Mandalangan sa amihanang purok sa Mindasilang. Halos dili siya makatuo nga si Abukay ug Perikoy maoy nangunay pagsugat kaniya ug ingon sa nahulma sa ilang mga dagway ang di-malilong nga kahingawa.
HARIBON
Oy, ingon sa naay gumonhap akong nasud-ong
Luyo sa inyong nagkulismaot nga mga nawong?
Nganong kamo man ang nagkutayg dalandalan
Niining akong pagpapauli sa Kalawaanan ?
ABUKAY
Talahurong Haribon, ayaw kahikurat sa among itaho:
Imong Lawaang buhatan gihuptan sa dagkongungo.
Way duhaduha ang nagpaluyo ning tanang hitabo
Mao ang Tres Sawahes samtang didto ka sa layo.
PERIKOY
Tinuod kana,Talahuron! Kagubot ang nagsamtang

Gisulsolan nila ug gimobilisa ang mga insektos!
Gipangulohan ni Haring Gangis ang nag-insurektos!
Tanang mga mananap nga alangisngis og tingog–
Gipa-ambahan sa ilang orkestrang makabungog!

Apan, bepor pa niana, gihamok sa mga halas ugtanga,
Ug uban pang mga mananap nga nagum-om og laa—
Mga ulahipan, lampinig, pasgaw, buyog ug putyukan–
Aron pamahiton ang tanang ihalas nga kahayopan.
Nagyagaw sa kalisang ang mga binaw ug unggoy,
Naukay ang mga langgam, mga manok, mga baboy!
Ug labing mangtas sa tanan mao ang mga iro!
Gilutos mga kahayopang sa lasang lumulupyo!
Napugos intawon pagpamahawa sa kalasangan
Ug midangop sa mga walog ug mga kaanotan,
Duas sa peligro sa gutom, sakit ug katalagman,
Hinikawan sa gawasnong katungod ug kagawasan.

Mao kana, Talahuron, ang kinatibuk-ang kahimtang
Ug buot sa Tres Sawahes nga imong ipahamtang
Balaod militar sa tibuok kalasangan aron masagang
Pagkatay sa kagubot sa ubang dapit sa Mindasilang.

Hmm. . .dili tiaw ang kadaot segun sa giasoy ninyo. . .
Nabutang ako niini sa duha ka nag-umpugang bato:
Kon sila akong supakon, kamatayon akong paingnan,
O kon dili ba kaha, golpe de gulat sa akong pamunoan.
Ug kon ako silang uyonan, ang kausaban matalikdan,
Ang tano-de-reporma biyaan ug ubang kabag-ohan?
Ug siguradong mabulit sa lapok akong kadungganan,
Gawas sa pihong kaalaotan sa masang gipahinungdan.

Puwera lang sa mga oportyunista ug traydores
Nga way panukong miduyog sa Tres Sawahes,
Mohangop sa imong mga proyekto sa kalamboan
Ug dili motumpawak kanila sa dugang kadaotan.
Molaban sila nimo kon interes nila imong tinguhaon
Apan mokontra usab kon ugaling imong linglahon.

English translation
The Seed of Peace in Default
A bad sign meets Haribon as he tarries in his flight back to the mountains of the Big Isle, after his series of consultations with the bagani warriors of Mandalangan in the northern regions of Mindasilang. He cannot easily believe that Abukay and Perikoy are the ones who meet him on his way and as though a shadow of anxiety inextricably resides in their countenance.
HARIBON
Oh, I can gather some issue of unpeace behind
The grimace of anxiety in your countenance?
Why doesit have to be you two who bother to clear
My return flight to the Lawaan Forest realm?
ABUKAY
Honorable Sir, brace yourself vis-a-vis our recital:
Your Lawaan Office is now usurped by big ogres.
No doubt it’s the Tres Sawahes who masterminded
All the events that led to this while you were away.
PERIKOY
That’s true, Honorable Sir! Grim disorder now reigns
In the southern region of the big isle of Mindasilang.
The monkeys, the deers and all the birds in the realm
Are in chaotic disarray and terror grips them all.
HARIBON
What? These are masterminded by my reliables—
The Tres Sawahes? Come, give me the full details!
This constitutes a treasonous act against my regime!
I kind of foresaw this from what I witnessed at Danaw.
ABUKAY
They agitated and mobilized the masses of insects!
Haring Gangis led the cicadas in their rebellion!
All the insects that can blow stinging hissing sound
Were roused to make noise like a deafening orchestra!
PERIKOY
But, before all these, the snakes and the scorpions,
All the little creatures with poison in their fangs—
The centipedes and all species of wasps and bees—
Waged a war of terror against the forest wild beasts!
The southern forest realm is now in pandemonium!
The monkeys, deers, hogs and fowls in riotous disorder!
Most vicious of them all are the battalions of canines
That drove thousands of forest dwellers from their homes!
Countless victims of forced evacuation are they that now
Are settled in the plains and valleys and sparse thickets,
Exposed to hazards of hunger, sickness and death,
Denied of their inalienable rights and sacred liberties.
ABUKAY
Such is the present state of affairs, Honorable Sir,
And the Tres Sawahes want you to declare and impose
Martial law in the affected forest zones in order to prevent
A spill over of terror to neighboring places in Mindasilang.
HARIBON
Hmm, such disaster as you have recounted is no joke.
I am like being placed between two horns of a dilemma:
If I contradict them, death would be my sure fate,
Or, it could be a coup d’etat,or a violent regime change!?
And if I consign my fate to their whim, what will become
Of the dreamt land reform or the desired genuine Change?
And sure as hell, my honor will be wrapped with mud,
Aside from disaster to the masses I’ve sworn to serve.
ABUILKAY & PERIKOY
Honorable Sir, the fate of the masses is in your hands
To ascertain with a decision that accords with the future.
The welfare of those to whom you dedicate your office
Should be kept always close to your bosom, we pray.
HARIBON
Thank you! Thank you so much, my loyal compatriots!
I shall aways abide by your words of caveat and exhortation!
I pledge to do what concerns the best interest of the many,
Not those which will redound to their misery and doom!
ABUKAY & PERIKOY
The entire population of fowls and other wildlife beasts,
The entire citizenry in the air and those under the forest trees,
Save those who have chosen to be opportunists and traitors
And have sold their souls to the treacherous Tres Sawahes,
Will embrace your projects designed for development
And which will not consign them to eternal damnation.
They will rally behind you if their interests you’ll adopt
But will also fight you if your words are vile deception.
HARIBON (To himself)
Naturally, I shall carefully scale both the pros and cons.
The Tres Sawahes are very clever agents of Bakunawa. . .
I must with their whims conform if I wish not to die
And so must I deal with them in hyperbole and metaphor.
