DAVAO CITY, Philippines — City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio urged the people of Davao to emulate Jose Rizal’s nationalism and patriotism.
“As we confront this turbulence of terrorism, I encourage every Dabawenyo to awaken in you the Rizalian spirit in this present crusade for peace, freedom, and security in Mindanao,” Duterte-Carpio said in a speech read on her behalf by city administrator Dwight Domingo, during the commemoration of Rizal’s 156th birth anniversary.
She said that Rizal’s words, life, and death provided the impetus of the revolution that ultimately led to the nation’s freedom.
“May you be reminded that volunteerism, single parenthood, and other underrated acts of heroism are just as noteworthy as the greater ones,” Duterte-Carpio said.
Rizal, the country’s national hero, was born on June 19, 1861, in Calamba, Laguna. His birthday was commemorated through a short program attended by city officials, during which, members of the Davao City Police Office staged a Volley of Fire and Taps ceremony.
The Diplomatic Corps, sponsoring organizations and workers of national agencies also made a flower offering. (davaotoday.com)
