DAVAO CITY, Philippines — Five people were confirmed dead, four of whom are foreigners, after a “small phreatic event” occurred in the Mayon Volcano Tuesday morning in Legaspi City, Albay province.

Gov. Joey Salceda made the confirmation in a television interview.  The fatalities were mountain climbers and a local tour guide.

At 8:25 AM, the volcano produced a small phreatic event that lasted for 73 seconds, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).  It added the gray to brown clouds reached 500 meters above the volcano’s summit.  However, Phivolcs has not detected any volcanic earthquake in the past 24 hours of observation.

“Seismic and gas emission parameters remain within background levels and indicate no intensification of volcanic activity,” Phivolcs said, maintaining an Alert Level 0 status, which means that “no eruption is imminent.”

Phivolcs advised the public to refrain from entering the six-kilometer radius of the Permanent Danger Zone as sudden steam-driven eruptions and rock falls could suddenly occur, with little or no warning.

The last recorded eruption of Mayon Volcano is in 2010.  (davaotoday.com)
