DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The local government has immediately suspended classes from Preschool to High school on Tuesday morning as the Public Strom Warning Signal in Davao del Sur goes No. 2, said Mayor Sara Duterte in a text message.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) includes Davao City in the location of Davao del Sur.

Dodong Atillo, spokesperson for the Department of Education-XI, said they already issued a directive suspending classes and announced that teachers “are not required to come to class.”

The cities of Digos, Samal and Panabo also announced class suspension.

Meanwhile, Edward Aquino, officer in charge of the Commission on Higher Education-XI said “Ched has not declared suspension of classes.”  However, he added that schools have discretionary power.

As of this morning, the San Pedro College, Philippine Women’s College and St. John Paul II College suspended their classes.

As of 7 AM Tuesday, Pagasa said the eye of typhoon ‘Pablo’ (International name: Bopha) is already above the province of Compostela Valley, some three hours away from here.

Grabe.  (The typhoon is) so devastating.  I can’t imagine.  We can’t account the damage yet,” Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy told davaotoday.com in a text message.  He added “Let us pray it will subside na.”

Since Monday, Uy said, evacuation has started but he can’t give the figures of the affected families yet.

As of 4 AM Tuesday, ‘Pablo’ made a landfall in Davao Oriental affecting the towns of Tarragona, Mati and Manay.  It’s Signal No. 3 in the province.

According to Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat, ‘Pablo’ has already damaged properties, mostly residential houses.

Already 400 families from Mati have evacuated while there are mass evacuations in Baganga and Tarragona.  (Marilou Aguirre-Tuburan/davaotoday.com)
