IN PHOTOS: Marawi after its ‘liberation’

Oct. 20, 2017

MARAWI CITY, Philippines – When President Rodrigo Duterte declared Marawi City liberated from terrorists’ influence last Tuesday, October 17, reporters covering the crisis in the country’s only Islamic city got a glimpse of the face of the destruction inside the battle zone.

These are the photo from the Bangolo area going to Barangay Datu sa Dansalan, passing through the crossing of Raya Madaya, where heavy firefight was still heard. The Barangay Datu Sa Dansalan is popularly known to residents of Marawi as the port area, which is once one of the busiest portion of the Lanao del Sur province’s capital.

Marawi residents Ahmad Tamano and Khalid Alonto helped Davao Today identify the buildings in the photos.

The road going to Barangay Raya Madaya used to be a busy street. The ruined building at the left was an extension building of Pacasum College. When Tamano and Alonto saw the photographs, they were surprised that the main building was not there anymore. It burned down to ashes when it was hit by aerial bombing.

The building at the right was the office of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
