DAVAO CITY, Philippines — A number of domestic workers in the region are still unaware of their rights guaranteed under the Domestic Workers Act, a labor official said.
“At this time many domestic workers are not aware of their rights and the benefits they should get from their employers,” said Virginia Camus, labor representative of the Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board in region 11 on Monday, October 16.
The RTWPB conducted the first public hearing on the wage hike of domestic workers or “kasambahay” (house-help) on Monday at the Grand Men Seng Hotel here.
She said they observed from their consultation that some domestic workers are not aware that they should receive benefits from their employers including social pension, Philhealth, and Pag-Ibig fund.
Camus said the employers should pay for the mandatory benefits of the domestic worker who receives a salary of less than P5,000 monthly.
The RTWPB-11 plans to conduct a seminar among domestic workers on November 21 to 23 in Davao region.
