DAVAO CITY – Makabayan senatorial candidate Rep. Neri Colmenares today, April 28 called on fellow lawmakers to sign the override resolution against the veto of President Benigno Aquino III’s veto of the P2,000 Social Security System (SSS) pension hike bill that was passed.
On January 14, Pres. Aquino vetoed the bill pointing out that it would compromise the stability of the SSS benefit system in favor of pensioners and their dependents.
“May 1, Labor Day is near and signing the override resolution would be the gift of congressmen to workers and pensioners alike because when we succeed in overriding Pres. Aquino’s veto then the additional P2,000 would be a great help to our elderly pensioners and for our workers when they retire,” said Colmenares who is the bill’s main proponent.
Colmenares said he will continue gathering support from members of Congress to vote for the override once Congress resumes session on May 23, 2016.
“Congress will reconvene on May 23 to June 10, 2016, and I will again move for the override of the veto,” he said.
As of April 17, 89 lawmakers have signed the resolution supporting the override veto.
“We will get the signatures of many other members of Congress, regardless of party affiliation. Hopefully we will have more than 192 signatures when session resumes on May 23,” said Colmenares.
Colmenares said they are calling on senior citizens to write to their district representatives and ask them to vote for the override once Congress convenes. (davaotoday.com)
