DAVAO CITY — The city government here will hold summer sports festivities in May.

Charles Raymond Maxey, staff of the City Sports Development Division said the sports activities will open on May 9 at the Times Beach but various events will start on May 1. Maxey said the City has set aside a budget of P1.5 million for 15 sports events and trainings.

“We will have trainings for basketball, chess, football, volleyball and rugby football, which will happen on different days,” said Maxey.

On May 1-3, the 5th Daba-Daba Ultimate Frisbee will be held at the Tionko football field, while on May 2, a triathlon event will be held at the Villa Josefina Subdivision in Toril.

The Rugby football is set on May 11-15 at Don Juan dela Cruz Elementary School in Toril. The Airsoft competition will also be held on May 14-15.

On May 15, the Dragon Boat competition will be held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel and the Taekwondo competition will be held in Buhangin Gym. On May 19 and May 22-26 the volleyball competition will be held at the Almendras Gym or the Davao City Sports and Recreational Center.

On May 28-30 another volleyball event will be held at Times Beach. Events like Aero marathon is set on May 29 at the Abreeza Mall and chess at the NCCC Mall on May 26 to 28.

At the end of the month, on May 30-31, there will be a trail run.

Maxey said athletes from Davao City comprise the majority of the 572 athletes, coaches and chaperons delegation of the Davao Region for the 2015 Palarong Pambansa.

Maxey also said the region placed 11th in 2013 and 8th in the 2014 Palaro in Laguna. “This year, DepEd (Department of Education) officials, host LGU (local government unit – Tagum) are targeting that we place fifth,” he said.

Maxey said that “this is not a simple goal and it all depends on the performance of the athletes.” He said that Davao athletes are “ready-to-go” and are already in Tagum for nearly a month to prepare.
