A bloodletting activity from media members and other citizens is going on at the NCCC Mall until 5 pm today spearheaded by media members under BUGKOS Media Action Group.

This activity is of big help since an estimated 80 bags of blood are requested every day at the Philippine National Red Cross for transfusions and other medical purpose, this according to PNRC’s senior medical technologist Evelyn Joy Chua who graced the opening ceremony held this morning.

Chua said donating blood helps as it rejuvenates the body. “Just as a car needs a regular ‘change- oil’, so does the blood cells. It needs to be replenished for the human body to be in good condition,” Chua said.

The PNRC hands out a privilege card to blood donors where holders are given priority in times of need, free of processing charges, Chua said

Anyone physically fit with a body weight not below 50 kilograms can donate blood.

Trishia Ann Aligato of BUGKOS Media Action Group said the idea of enjoining members of the media to take part in such an undertaking was hatched at height of the Yolanda catastrophe which hit the Visayas.

“We realize that, beyond providing relevant information, the media can also do their own share of helping lives, as there is believed to be one person needing of blood transfusion every 15 minutes,” Aligato said.
