DAVAO CITY — The City Transport and Traffic Management Office (CTTMO) will add calming devices near schools to avoid accidents in preparation for the opening of classes next week.
Rhodelio Poliquit, CTTMO department head said the calming device called rumble strip will be placed near schools to slowdown vehicles.
“We started to put up the rumble strips on road near the schools located in national highways,” Poliquit said.
Rumble strips aid motorists in increasing visibility of the pavement edge as they produce noise and vibrations that alert drivers. The strips can be done by cutting grooves within the pavement surface.
Calming device is used to slowdown or restrict vehicles to speed up especially on national highways or residential areas.
Poliquit said that the rumble strips will prevent the passing vehicles from accelerating their speed near schools.
However, Poliquit said that the CTTMO will not put up rumble strips in all schools in the City.
“We only put up rumble strips on schools located at Bolton area, Sasa area and Indangan area here in the City,” he said. Poliquit said that they put up in Indangan because a lot of motorcycles operate in the area. He also said they based it on the number of accidents that happened near school zones in Indangan area.
Poliquit added that CTTMO focused on schools near national highway “because not all schools have a 20 kilometer per hour (kph) speed limit.”
“Some schools especially near national highway have 30 to 60 kph,” he said.
The CTTMO didn’t use hump calming device because Poliquit said that it damages vehicles, especially lowered cars.
“As the school year starts on Monday, motorists should observe the rules and regulation especially in school zones because there will be a lot of students present near roads,” he said.
Poliquit said that aside from the rumble strips, the CTTMO will also put up signages near school zones and road markings.(davaotoday.com)
