The Inquirer reports today that Harmony Gold Mining Co. Ltd., reputedly the world’s fifth largest gold mining company and the largest in South Africa, is setting its eyes on Diwalwal, the gold-rush site in Southern Mindanao.
Diwalwal is said to have the country’s biggest gold deposit. It is also the site of armed conflicts and tragedies. Tens of thousands of people, mostly small miners, rely on it for livelihood, while several mining companies have tried to take control of the mountain, often using the Philippine military. The business sector and the government regard Diwalwal as a key player in the mining industry.
