DAVAO CITY – The Department of Trade and Industry XI admitted that they are still not able to identify the cause of the widely known problem of Mitsubishi Montero’s sudden unintended acceleration (SUA).

In a weekly press conference here, Edwin Banquerigo, Davao City Field Office director of DTI, said that based on series of tests and discussion with the experts, “they were not able to determine the cause of the SUA.”

As of now, there are already 24 Montero users who filed complaints regarding the SUA of the said car, one of whom is from Davao City, Banquerigo said.

“We have seen the problem, but the real cause has not been determined,” Banquerigo said.

Banquerigo added that they are now planning to create a third party group which will do further testing on the issue of automatic Montero cars.

DTI XI Regional Director Belinda Ambi said that they have not yet identified who will be composing the group but, “obviously [it will be] from the private sector for it to be non-partisan.”

Ambi said that the DTI has instructed the Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corp. (MMPC), “to fully explain to all buyers the manner of using Montero automatic transmission vehicles prior to purchase.”

For now, Ambi said that the “logical thing to do” for MMPC is to recall the car units.

Ambi added that the investigating body from DTI recommended that “all the 24 units shall undergo mandatory preventive maintenance, which will be offered by the MMPC.”

“It shall cover also all the replacement of parts, directly related to engine, brake, and transmission system, at no cost to the owner,” she said. (davaotoday.com)
