Region XI’s COVID-19 cases breach 4,000 mark; Davao City with highest active cases

DAVAO CITY, Philippines – The Department of Health in the region (DOH-11) has reported 561 new cases of COVID-19 from October 17-23, bringing the total number of cases to 4,474. The center said that 1,012 of these are active cases.

Davao City recorded the highest in active cases with 750. Meanwhile, Davao del Sur has 94, Davao del Norte has 87, Davao de Oro has 40, and Davao Oriental has 27.

Four areas in Davao City – Talomo North, Buhangin, Agdao, and District C (comprised of Barangays 21-C to 28C) – and Digos City were identified with increasing COVID-19 cases in the region, based on the report released by DOH Regional Director Dr. Annabelle Yumang in a virtual presser last Oct. 21.

Dr. Julinda Acosta, technical officer of the Davao City Health Office, said the rise in cases for the past weeks were observed lumped in companies or institutions with a large number of workforce.

“We advise companies to implement strict safety protocol among their employees and their offices. They should not lower their guards,” she urged.

Acosta presented that cases are bound to increase if there are 10 persons infected in a company or 20 cases in two to three companies.

The DOH-11 added that 284 patients have recovered from the disease, bringing the total number of survivors to 3,306.

The total death toll is now 156 with 25 new deaths, one from Davao del Norte and 24 from Davao City.

As of 4 PM today, Oct. 24, DOH reported the total number of COVID-19 cases at 367,819. Of the confirmed cases, 47,773 (13.0%) are active cases; 313,112 (85.1%) are recoveries; and 6,934 (1.9%) are deaths. (davaotoday.com)
