Anakbayan to Henares: Go after foreign corporations, not our hard-working doctors

“If the Aquino administration wants to collect more taxes and revenues, it should look into the mirror, not by bullying our hardworking doctors and medical professionals”

This was the response of Vencer Crisostomo, national chairperson of the youth group Anakbayan, to a series of degrading newspaper ads by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) which portray doctors as tax evaders.

“It is hypocritical for the Aquino administration to engage in a smear campaign against alleged tax evaders, when its policies result in hundreds of billions of pesos in lost revenues every year” he said.

The youth leader cited a study by the IBON Foundation which said that the government loses around P100 billion annually due to the removal of tariffs imposed by the World Trade Organization (WTO). In addition, former Finance Secretary Juanita Amatong said back in 2003 that the government lost P229.4 billion in potential earnings due to tax exemptions granted to foreign corporations.

“We encourage the medical profession to ask the hard questions: Why exempt large corporations, especially foreign ones, from paying taxes? Why squeeze hard-working professionals and workers for their meager earnings?” said Crisostomo.
