For the second year, Davao City won the Green Banner Award, one of the prestigious and outstanding awards given to a local government unit, city or municipality of the region because of its relentless campaign in promoting and implementing its nutrition program.
Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan received the Award in behalf of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte who was busy for the arrival of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo same day.
The award was given during the 2006 Regional Nutrition Awarding ceremony Wednesday (Nov 29) at Grand Men Seng hotel, Davao City. The affair was spearheaded by the National Nutrition Council led by its regional head Ma. Teresa Ungson and the City Health Offices nutrition division chief Venus Millana.
Presentation of awards was led by Dr. Cyrus Trocio of DOH, City Health Officer Dr. Josephine Villafuerte and other nutrition stakeholders.
Panabo City Mayor Rey Gabina received the award as Crown Awardee; Compostela Valley Governor Jose Caballero and Nabunturan, Compostela Valley were also Crown Awardees; while the Regional Outstanding barangay nutrition scholar was Bernardita Bastasa of Brgy Cogon, Babak, Samal.
The Crown Award is given to a municipality, city or province that has been adjudged by the interagency regional nutrition evaluation team as outstanding in the region in the implementation of its nutrition plan for three consecutive years.
The Barangay Nutrition Scholars program is a strategy under the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition that involves training, deployment and supervision of volunteer workers or barangay nutrition scholars.
By virtue of Presidential Decree No. 1569, every barangay in the country is mandated to deploy one BNS to be responsible for monitoring the nutritional status of the culnerable and for delivering nutrition services and other related activities.
NNC gives due recognition to the BNS with outstanding performance in the region by awarding her with a BNS trophy and other benefits. (PIA-XI/Rose B. Palacio)
