DAVAO CITY, Philippines – On the 53rd Fish Conservation Week, fisherfolks here will join a series of training sessions to promote awareness on marine environmental protection among the members of the fisheries sector.
In a City Information Office dispatch, the training “will highlight conservation and fishery laws and how these can help the sector protect the source of their livelihood and improve their income.”
The Fish Conservation Week will be held from October 17 to October 21.
Head of the Davao City Agriculture Office’s Fishery Resource Management Services Division Mary Moratin said the training will benefit 36,000 members of the Federation of Fisherfolks Associations of Davao City who are spread across 24 coastal villages.
“The sessions are ultimately aimed at cultivating a sense of volunteerism among fisherfolks and develop them as potential partners in the implementation of coastal environment conservation programs,” Moratin said.
Meanwhile, Tirso Avila, chair of the Tibungco Fisherfolks Association, said being organized has made easier for fisherfolks to make a living, improve and gain more knowledge on fishing techniques, gain support from concerned agencies.
Avila also claimed that dynamite fishing in coastal areas has stopped. (davaotoday.com)
