Group assails killings of urban poor who fight demolition

Jun. 07, 2015

DAVAO CITY – Urban poor group Kadamay assails the unabated cases of killings of urban poor who are defending their homes against demolition.

Since President Benigno Aquino III assumed his post in 2010, Kadamay has recorded 16 cases of killings of urban poor nationwide who were active in defending their homes.

Just recently, officer of Anakpawis Kaunlaran Chapter Benilda Santos was gunned down on May 22 in front of a barricade against demolition in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City.

Last May 10, a failed attempt to abduct Lilian Velasquez, Kadamay national vice chairperson for Southern Tagalog and an active organizer against the eviction of urban poor in the region was recorded.

The group slams the Aquino administration for its Public-Private Partnership (PPP) program which “evicts urban poor from their communities.”

Kadamay leaders from Metro Manila and Southern Tagalog plan to hold a candle-lighting protest to call the government’s attention to end the killings and abductions of urban poor.(Diana C. Tomale/davaotoday.com)
