DAVAO CITY – The progressive Bayan Muna partylist renewed its call on government to release all political prisoners following the death of an elderly political detainee Friday morning.
Eduardo Serrano, 62, died Friday due to a heart ailment. Serrano was a consultant of the National Democratic Front and was one of the 561political prisoners languishing in different jail facilities in the country.
Serrano was jailed for 11 years. Bayan Muna Representative Neri Colmenares described him as someone who “lived a simple, principled, and extraordinary life lit by an arduous fire to end the oppression of the poor and the marginalized.”
Only last month, the Makabayan Bloc in Congress filed House Resolution 2559 demanding the immediate release of political prisoners, especially the elderly, sick, and the nursing mothers.
“It is with great grief and rage that we say farewell to such a man, who, at the last decade of his life, was refused his freedom,” said Colmenares.
Fellow Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said they hold the Aquino government responsible for the death of Serrano.
“We renew our call on President Aquino to release all political prisoners, especially to the aging and the sickly, the nursing, and the pregnant,” said Zarate. (davaotoday.com)
