Solon says MRT and LRT should be ready for typhoons

DAVAO CITY – Members of Bayan Muna Partylist picketed at the Monumento station of the Light Rail Transit-1 (LRT-1) on Wednesday to demand the government to make the trains in the capital ready for the rainy season.

“With billions of budget poured into our train system, there is no more excuse for the government why there are only a number of working train coaches now, and why roofs are leaking in the few working ones,” Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate said.

Zarate said commuters are burdened with longer queues, leaking roofs and the 87% fare hike last January, which will supposedly improve services of the trains.

“The decrepit state of our trains poses hazards to commuters especially in the rainy season. What if the electronics go haywire from the water leaks? For our poor commuters to endure this kind of indignity everyday in our transport system is unacceptable and inexcusable,” Zarate said.

Zarate said they are pushing for the rollback of fare hike and the nationalization of the train system.(davaotoday.com)
