COMPOSTELA, Compostela Valley, Philippines — “Nagdahili ang yuta. Dili nako makaya matabang sila kay gitabang pa nako ang isa.”
Valentine Pabillana, 46, said feeling helpless when his step-daughter and grandchild were buried in a landslide after typhoon ‘Pablo’ hit their area in Maparat village Tuesday morning.
Nelia Francesamiti, 20 and her 11-month old baby Bodoy immediately died. Rosie Francesamiti, 12 also died.
In Nabunturan, strong winds and heavy rains started at 4:30 AM, said Merlita Macapas.
“This is the first time in (the) history (of Compostela Valley),” she said.
The typhoon has caused damaged felling trees and electric posts and caused flooding. It also damaged agricultural crops.
“Duha ka adlaw pa lang nakong natanom ang humay, gihanaw na,” Ben, a resident of Linoan village in Montevista, said.
The rivers of Tagmanok, Iho and Mawab overflowed destroying a number of houses along the riverbanks.
The Bataan Compostela Valley Daang Maharlika was impassable for four hours due to landslide.
In Montevista, about 300 families have evacuated to the C. M. Recto Elementary School in Magsaysay village. Most are workers of a limestone mine owned by a certain Rey Bucas and ‘Cruz.’
