Nov. 03, 2014

DAVAO CITY – Survivors of different disasters  will hold a national conference on the commemoration of the first year anniversary of typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) in Tacloban city this coming November 8.

Kim Gargar, spokesperson of environmental group Panalipdan (Defend), said the conference will discuss “how up to now the government does not have a comprehensive program to address the environmental destruction and reducing the region’s vulnerability to disasters.”

The conference will also form the national network of survivors of different natural calamities in the country to share their experiences in confronting problems regarding relief and rehabilitation programs or the lack of them.

The delegates from the region are mostly typhoon Pablo survivors who banded together in various organizations like Barug Katawhan (Stand People) and Indug Kautawan (People Uprise).

Twenty survivors of typhoon Pablo from Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley will join the conference.

“We hope to formalize the unity of all disaster survivors through a national network of disaster survivors, where its name will be finalized during the conference,” Gargar said.

The conference will convene on November 5-6 to be followed by series of activities  on 7 and 8. (davaotoday.com)
