DAVAO CITY – A company of cement operating here should be held responsible for polluting Davao River, a local official said on Tuesday.

City Councilor Leo Avila, chair of the committee on environment, said Safecon Industries Incorporated threw its waste along Davao River, particularly in Maa side.

Avila said the community nearby reported that their children now have sores and skin diseases because of the concrete waste thrown in the river.

Avila said the company has violated Section 27 of Republic Act 9275 or The Philippine Clean Water Act of 2004 which prohibits “a) Discharching, depositing or causing to be deposited material of any kind directly or indirectly in the water bodies of along the margins of any surface water, where the same shall be liable to be washed into such surface water, either by tide action or by storm, floods or otherwise, which could cause water pollution or impede natural flow in the water body.”

Committee on Health chair, Councilor Mary Joselle Villafuerte meanwhile said they will inspect the community to verify the reports.

The two committees planned to conduct a joint committee hearing on the issue.
