DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Indigenous crafts and products from various regions in Mindanao took center stage at the formal opening of the 2017 Mindanao Trade Expo at the Abreeza Mall here on Friday, August 11.
With a theme “Empowering Community through Creative Product Designs” the trade expo will run until the 20th of August this year.
Displayed handicrafts at the expo are products of local craftsmen from various indigenous cultural communities in Mindanao, the 2017 MTE said in a statement to the media on Friday.
“These are handcrafted collections that promote culture and tradition of indigenous people in Mindanao as well as local craftsmen in different livelihood community,” the 2017 MTE added.
Aside from handicrafts, furniture, beauty and wellness products, as well as fresh and processed foods, can also be found at the booths in the expo.
One of the groups that joined the expo is the Lake Sebu Indigenous Women Weavers Association, Inc. from Lake Sebu in South Cotabato.
Members of LASIWWAI displayed in their booth locally crafted T’nalak clothes, necklaces, rings, bracelets and other souvenir items.

The 2017 MTE said the event will also serve as a venue where local products will be presented to buyers, suppliers and other business groups from other parts of the country and even abroad.
The organizers of the event are expecting daily visitors at the expo during its week-long presentation at the Abreeza Mall.
“The event will highlight a modern-vision of the homegrown products from communities that strengthen its sustainability, productivity, and competitiveness,” the 2017 MTE said.
The event is being supported by the Department of Trade and Industry, the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc., the Abreeza Ayala Malls, Aboitiz Power and the City Government of Davao. (davaotoday.com)
