DAVAO CITY — More than 30 media practitioners from Davao City, Davao del Norte and Bukidnon converged at Lanikai of Hijo Port Resort in Madaum, Tagum City to learn more about science-based agriculture.
The two-day seminar on Media and Science-based Agriculture which ran from June 18 to June 19 was sponsored by the Initiative for Farm Advocacy and Resource Management (iFarm) and Croplife Philippines.
The event was aimed at making the media practitioners understand the relevance of science-based agriculture. This is to enhance agricultural productivity, which should be achieved to support the food needs of the world’s growing population.
Topics tackled included “Advocating Science-based Agriculture” discussed by iFarm board chairman Dr. Calixto Protacio; “Aerial Spraying Technology” discussed by Dr. Emily Fabregar of the Philippine Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA); “Case Study on Reportage on Aerial Spraying Issue” discussed by iFarm managing director Cris Michelena.
While talks on science-based agriculture took the limelight, participants to the seminar also took time to discuss the journalistic profession. Topics included “Reporting the Provinces” by Manila Times national editor Iskho Lopez; “Corporate Reporting and the Media” by Samahang Plaridel president Rolando Estabillo; and “Trends in Editing and Reportage” by Philippine Daily Inquirer , senior editor Ester Dipasupil.
As part of the seminar, participants including the executives of sponsoring agencies went out for a trip to the airstrip of Tagum Agricultural Development Co. Inc (Tadeco) in Panabo City to observe the global positioning system (GPS)-guided aerial spraying of fungicide to control the spread of sigatoka, a banana disease. They were also taken to see the banana tissue culture laboratory of Hijo Plantation.
Participants were finally toured around the Hijo Port Resort property which covers the 70-hectare forest and fish pond resort. (PIA XI)
