DAVAO CITY — Planning to watch a movie in downtown this weekend, but want something beyond the usual predictable Hollywood plot?
Five award-winning short films will be screened at Cinematheque Davao this weekend, January 30-31. These films are entries that topped the 2015 Singkuwento International Film Festival.
1. Tago Nang Tago (Roberto Reyes Ang)
“Tago Nang Tago” tells of a man who left his country for the United States of America to try and achieve the American dream. He comes to realize that a sly relative has furtively turned his dream into a nightmare.
2. My Revolutionary Mother (Jethro Patalinghug)
“My Revolutionary Mother” follows a young filmmaker who is in his need for self-identity. He confronts his mother, a former political activist in the Philippines, about his feelings of abandonment as a child.
3. Pusong Bato (Martika Escobar)
“Pusong Bato” is a film-within-a film about Cinta Dela Cruz, a faded actress who tries to relive and remember her glorious days as a movie star in the 1970s.
4. Pahiyom Alang Kang Evelyn (Chloe Veloso)
In “Pahiyom Ala Kang Evelyn,” Evelyn seeks justice for the death of her journalist father in this 18-minute short film.
5. Ang Mga Bulong Bituka ng Sta. Mesa ( Hector Barreto Calma)
“Ang mga Bulong sa Bituka ng Sta. Mesa” is composed of black and white images from the somber depths of Sta. Mesa, which are juxtaposed in its railroad that metaphorically connects the lives of each individual in the community. These images have been striking the heart and sympathy of the filmmaker for almost a decade of his life. These made him decide to make the community (Sta. Mesa) as the subject matter of his documentary film to depict its harrowing situation. Captured by a single camera and a keen eye, each moving picture is accompanied by stories of grief, of misery, hope and inspiration.
The short films will be screened on January 30 at 3:30 pm, and on January 31 at 1:30 pm. Tickets are sold at Php 120 per person. For more information, visit Cinematheque Davao’s Facebook page. (davaotoday.com)
