DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Students from colleges and universities here sign up to volunteer as liaison officers for the upcoming Association of Southeast Asian Nation events which will be held here in 2017.
Princess Kan Chua, president of the Ateneo International Studies Students Organization said that to be admitted as one of the liaison volunteers for Asean events is a good training.
“These events will be a very good exposure for us,” Chua said.
Volunteers who signed up are students from the University of Southeastern Philippines, Ateneo de Davao University, Philippine Women’s College, Joji Ilagan Career Center, and University of Mindanao.
Majority of those who signed up are taking Mass Communications, AB English Language, Political Science, and International Studies.
50 volunteers
The screening was conducted by the City Administrative Office on Tuesday. Only 50 students were selected.
“We have already picked 20 volunteers during Tuesday’s screening,” said Assistant City Administrator Tristan Dwight Domingo. “We are still inviting those interested to come for an interview.”
Tapping students as volunteers is the city government’s way of training and developing young professionals, Domingo said in a City Information Office dispatch. “Certainly, we’re going to choose the very best as they will be the city’s frontliners – acting as liaison officers for high-level delegates.”
As Asean will be headed by the Philippines next year, meetings and other related events are expected to be held in major cities like Davao.
The volunteers selected will go through a training administered by the National Organizing Council for the Asean meetings in January, February, and July.
The volunteers may also serve on the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area activity in April 2017. (davaotoday.com)
