DAVAO CITY – Datu Bago awardee Joey Ayala will conduct a two-day workshop for the Lunhaw Awards beginning March 15 in Davao City, where his musical career first began.
Ayala, renowned for his use of Filipino ethnic instruments in his modern pop music, will direct and facilitate the second year of the annual MusiKalikasan at the Ateneo de Davao University’s Xavier Community Center.
The workshop will teach participants how to compose an effective song in order to promote environmental awareness and stewardship among the public, said Lemuel Manalo, one of the organizers of Lunhaw Awards.
“(The) workshop organizers also hope to gather more local compositions from participants that depict environmental issues and concerns as well as existing sustainable green initiatives,” he said.
Manalo said the Ateneo’s University Community Engagement and Advocacy Council (UCEAC) will be the event partner for this year’s workshop, as part of the school’s environmental advocacy.
The workshop is open to student songwriters, musicians, artists, theater performers and music teachers.
Only 30 participants will be accepted in order to make the workshop manageable, he said.
The workshop compositions, which hope to promote environmental awareness among the audience, will be performed to the public by the participants, together with Ayala, during the Lunhaw Awards concert on March 18.
The MusiKalikasan Workshop is a prelude to the annual Lunhaw Awards, which recognizes outstanding green initiatives by Dabawenyos.
The Lunhaw Awards is co-organized by the City Agriculturist’s Office (CAO), City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), Davao Association of Catholic Schools (DACS), Davao City Water District (DCWD), and the Interface Development Interventions. The event is supported by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
