DAVAO CITY, Philippines – In preparation for the upcoming commemoration Undas or All Saints’ Day on November 1, the Traffic Management Group (TMG) in Davao City bared a re-routing plan to ease the expected traffic congestion in roads leading to major cemeteries here.
During the regular press briefing at the city hall, Sr. Supt. Manuel Española, operations officer of the Traffic Management Center (TMC), bared their plan to temporarily convert some road networks to go in just one direction or ‘one way’, especially those leading to cemeteries.
Española also said that, for the convenience of motorists, private vehicles, including cargo trucks and busses that would pass McArthur highway coming from the south will only be allowed up to the junction of Quimpo Boulevard. Upon reaching the said junction, drivers are advised to make a right turn towards SM City.
The officer clarified that the re-routing in McArthur highway, particularly along the Davao Memorial Park, applies only to private vehicles, cargo trucks and buses. Public utility jeeps are still allowed to pass both lanes of the said highway but drivers are advised to strictly observe the designated loading and unloading areas.
Española also announced that the circumferential road from San Pedro Extension will also be converted to a one-way road for all motorists, whether private or public. The circumferential road leads to the city’s Catholic cemeteries, including Forest Lake, San Pedro and Orchard cemeteries.
During the celebration of Undas, only light vehicles are allowed to pass the circumferential road. Trucks and buses cannot go beyond the junction of F. Torres Street and are not allowed to pass by Mabini Street starting from the junction of Jacinto Extension will also be off-limits to trucks and buses. Visitors to the Chinese cemetery are advised to use Mabini Street going to the Sarenas Road.
Española said the 154-strong TMC are ready to assist the people who wish to visit their departed in cemeteries and his office is all set to implement Oplan Kaluluwa 2012.
“We expect that cemeteries will be filled with visitors during the Undas,” he said, and added that TMC will do its best to ease the traffic congestion especially in major roads leading to the cemeteries in the city. (Alex D. Lopez, davaotoday.com)
