DAVAO CITY—For topping the partylist elections in the city and for garnering over a million votes nationwide, Gabriela Women’s Partylist-Southern Mindanao is optimistic that more policies and programs for women and children will be pursued at the House of Representatives. Gabriela garnered 38, 577 votes or 8.01 percent of Davao City’s total partylist votes, followed by Bayan Muna which reaped 33,466 votes or equivalent to 6.95 percent of the total partylist votes.
Based on the latest partial and unofficial result of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) , both Gabriela and Bayan Muna along with other Makabayan affiliated partylists such as Anakpawis, Kabataan and Act Teachers partylist made it to the list of top 20 partylist that are assured to have respective seats at the House of the Representatives.
Gabriela Women’s Partylist’s first nominee is Davao City’s Datu Bago recipient and former city councilor Luzviminda Ilagan.
“The victory of Gabriela Women’s Party as well as of the other progressive partylists proves that despite the dirty attacks of the Arroyo administration and its military machinery against our group, we continue to have the people’s support,” said Nisa Opalla, Gabriela Women’s Partylist regional spokesperson in Southern Mindanao.
Opalla said that women votes are indeed powerful. “We will prove that in the next three years under the new presidency, we will steadfastly continue the struggle for social change in and out the mainstream politics,” she added.
Opalla also debunked the claims of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) that Makabayan lost the support of the people because Satur Ocampo and Liza Maza and its local candidates in the city did not win the elections. “The loss is merely temporary and not really a setback in the surging people’s movement.”
“We hurdled the challenges during the last elections including military’s black propaganda and the dominance of guns, goons and gold,” Opalla said. “In Congress, Gabriela vows to push for policies on food security, wage increase and adequate social services.”
