DAVAO CITY – The Davao del Norte Provincial Tourism Council urged the construction of a bridge connecting Davao City to the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos).
Provincial Tourism President Araceli Ayuste said that there is a need to put up the bridge to accommodate the increasing number of tourists visiting the island.
“Actually 12 years or 10 years ago, I am not into the bridge (project) because I want the island to be separated [from] the mainland. But now we can see that there is really a need to put up the bridge as it is difficult to go to the island during peak season,” Ayuste said.
Ayuste said that the project will provide a solution to the long queues at the Sasa wharf, especially during summer and holidays.
“Last December, the queuing time was three hours,” she said.
As of now, the project is still undergoing a feasibility study that would be offered to possible investors.
Ayuste said that there are already three foreign investors from Japan, China and Australia, who are interested in the construction of the bridge.
“Building the bridge connecting Davao City to Samal will double or triple in terms of investment especially tourism-related establishments. We can accommodate the influx of tourists because of easy accessibility,” she said.
Ayuste also said that they will also consider the eco-tourism of the island to preserve the natural resources.
The construction of the 1.2-kilometer bridge will cost almost P10 billion. (davaotoday.com)
