DAVAO CITY – Outgoing Davao City police chief Senior Superintendent Vicente Danao Jr., thanked the city government for its support to the Davao City Police Office, in a visit to the City Council on Tuesday.
Danao, who served as DCPO chief for more than two years, will be ending his term as city director on June 24. He will be replaced by the current chief of Regional Operations and Plans Division of the Police Regional Office, Senior Superintendent Michael John Dubria.
“I’m here today to surrender my exit call considering I have been here exactly two years and eight months when I assumed the office of the City director of Davao City,” Danao said.
The outgoing DCPO director said that he is thankful for all the help that was given by the 17th City council to the DCPO.
“We were able to address and solve it because of the support and help of the people, media, and the logistical support that was approved by the City Council,” he said.
He also thanked President-elect Rodrigo Duterte.
Under Danao’s watch, the DCPO implemented mandatory drug test and arrested and discharged fivr police members.
Danao added that during his term, three police officials who were allegedly involved in the illegal drug trade were killed.
Majority floor leader and City Councilor Bernard Al-ag said that Danao’s programs were successful especially the “Isumbong mo kang CD”.
The program enables the public to send reports, complaints or suggestions via Facebook or Twitter or the police’s office text hotline.
“The purpose of this is to immediately address the problem of our community through this text hotline without getting their full name addresses and these are all made through discreet information gathered form this text hotlines,” he said.
The City Council also awarded Danao a Certificate of Appreciation “for his exemplary performance as the city police director for two years and as one of the pillars in maintaining peace an order here in the city.”
Crime solution efficiency
The DCPO reported about the increased efficiency in crime-solving for the first quarter this year compared to the same period last year.
According to DCPO’s data, the crime solution efficiency from January to May 2016 is at 79.72 percent. This is 4.47 points higher than last year’s 75.28 percent.
Police data also showed that the total crime volume was 5,083 this year. This is lower compared to 5,854 crimes, both index and non-index filed in January to May last year. Meanwhile, a total of 4,183 crimes were cleared this year, which is slightly lower than last year’s 4,631.
One of the biggest anti-drug operation under Danao’s watch was the recovery of 62 kilos of cocaine by the Bunawan Police Station.
Davao City also recorded zero carnapping incident during his term.
Controversy
But Danao’s stint as a police chief in Davao was also tainted with the case of violence against women after a video of him having a fight with his wife went viral online.
Danao was issued with a relief order dated September 1, 2014 by then Davao Police Regional Office (PRO) director, Chief Superintendent, Wendy Rosario. His wife filed charges of physical injuries and grave misconduct against him before the Regional Internal Affairs Services 11. Danao returned to his post after a month of being relieved.
His wife also filed a complaint against him on October 29, 2014 for violating Republic Act 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act. The case was even backed by Gabriela Women’s Partylist.
