DAVAO CITY, Philippines – A leader of a transport group was killed Tuesday morning while leaving his house in Maharlika, Matina Aplaya.

Antonio “Dodong” Ortega Petalcorin, 56, married and treasurer of the Metro Davao Transport Cooperative was shot several times by an unidentified lone gunman, police authorities said.

Davao City Police Office Chief Senior Superintendent Ronald dela Rosa, in a text to davaotoday.com, said the gunman casually left on foot, heading to a waiting motorcycle.  The suspects fled towards the Times Beach area.

In the last decade, Petalcorin used to lead transport strikes in Davao City as leader of the militant Transmision-Piston.  He fought against the city’s rerouting scheme and the incessant oil price increases.  He later left Transmision and formed his own group, the Network of Transportation Organization, composed mainly of drivers of his fleet of jeepneys operating the Matina Aplaya route, as well as other operators.  He later joined the National Confederation of Transportworkers’ Union and the Alliance of Progressive Labor.  (davaotoday.com)
