The office of Councilor Angela Librado-Trinidad, along with Bayan Muna (People First) political party, has initiated poll automation seminars as early as October of last year to orient voters in different puroks and barangays on this year’s automated elections.
The poll automation briefing is aimed at voter’s education and other issues connected with the coming elections, especially issues concerning the protection of votes and electoral fraud.
“The initiative to hold voter’s education fora and seminars every week from late last year until this March, aims to make available education and modules focused particularly on poll automation especially to those women whose votes might be disenfranchised owing that they are not yet familiar with automated elections,” lawyer Leah Librado, one of the resource speakers in the said voter’s education remarked.
A total of 1,179 purok leaders, barangay functionaries, barangay health workers and barangay residents from Matina Aplaya, Matina Crossing, Catalunan Grande, Purok Kasilak, Purok Shanghai, Matina Aplaya, Bucana, Barangays. 21, 8-A, 7-A, 2-A, 4-A, 12-B, Bajada, 9-A, 19-B Hilltop, 21-C, 37, 76-A SIR, 22-C, 18-B, 31-D, 39, 20-B, 10-A, 19 and 33, mostly barangays from the first district, were able to avail of the voter’s education program.
Councilor Angging Librado-Trinidad, the Sangguniang Panlungsod chairperson on the committee on women & children, said that the newly-launched initiative of the office has made it possible for barangays to have their voters oriented on the poll automation process.
“The office has made it a point to stage this activity starting last year as we are constantly plagued with requests from the different barangays in the first district and also importantly, to address such concern because we see the need for our young voters to be able to safeguard their votes and be familiar with the automated elections this May,” she said.
Joel Virador, executive vice-president of Bayan Muna party, said the ‘voters’ education’ series is one way of effectively reaching out to the barangays in addressing their concerns “given that the Commission on Elections has yet to make the rounds in all the communities in the city.”
Virador added that, “an informed citizenry is the best weapon combating electoral fraud and disenfranchisement of votes.”
